Star-Bulletin staff
in WAC playHILO - Kenny Baugh pitched his second complete game of the season to lead Rice to a 5-2 win over Hawaii-Hilo last night at Francis Wong Stadium in the opening game of a Western Athletic Conference series.
It was the sixth straight loss for the Vulcans (10-16, 1-6). Rice improved to 9-12, 3-4. The team's meet again at 6 p.m. tonight at Wong and at noon tomorrow at the Kailua-Kona field.
Baugh (4-0) equaled his season-high of 10 strikeouts while scattering six hits and walking but one. Only UHH's Brian Rooke could solve the Owl junior; Rooke had three hits and scored both Vulcan runs.
Rice jumped on Vulcan starter Kaholo Rickard (4-2) for all five of its runs in the first three innings. Jason Gray and Jerry Van Noy had RBI singles in the first when the Owls scored three times, helped by a pair of UHH errors.
Jesse Roman knocked in the fourth run in the second, and Derek Michaelis had an RBI double in the third.
