Defending State Amateur champion Regan Lee blasts out of a trap.

Gomi shoots 69 to set
pace in State Amateur

Clayton Gomi fired a 3-under par 69 for a one-stroke lead over Ryan Koshi after yesterday's opening round of the State Amateur Golf Championship at Pearl Country Club.

Tied for third at 71 were Hiroyuki Katase, Van Wright and Tracy Shiroma.

Five players were bracketed at 72, including former State Amateur champs Brandan Kop (1996, 1980) and Guy Yamamoto (1996). The others at even par were Takayoshi Iseki, Norman Ganin-Asao and Joey Tadeo.

Defending champion Regan Lee was in other group of five at 1-over 73.

Tied with Lee were Phillip Animizu, Joe Phengsavath, Paul Kimura and William Coelho.
