Coach Bob Coolen's aggressive play calling and clutch hitting by senior Joyce Lum in the bottom of the seventh inning were the deciding factors as the Hawaii women's softball team opened the season with a 5-4 win over the Hofstra Dutchwomen last night in the Chevron Paradise Classic.

The Wahine, playing their first game of the season in the newly renovated Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, parlayed four Hofstra infield miscues into four unearned runs to win their sixth straight season opener.

Hawaii starting pitcher Desiree Duran overcame a shaky sixth inning to earn the complete-game victory. Duran surrendered four straight hits highlighted by a two-run home run by Hofstra right fielder Lisa Ciavardini.

After the Dutchwomen tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth, Duran regained her composure in the seventh, retiring the side in order. An errant throw by Hofstra catcher Samantha Schour on Stacie Hirano's steal attempt allowed Hirano to advance to third base.

Coolen said he noticed that Schour was throwing awkwardly the entire game and decided to test her arm calling for the steal.

"It looked like she had a sore shoulder. She was lolli-popping the ball," Coolen said.

Coolen's two-out gamble set the stage for clean-up hitter Lum, who was hitting the ball hard all night.

With the count at 1-2, Lum rocketed a single to shortstop Lindsay Sawyer and beat out the throw to win the game.

"Joyce had a great at-bat," Coolen said. "All I told her was that she didn't have to hit a homerun, just put the ball in play."

The Wahine continue round-robin play in the six-team event today with a doubleheader against Texas at 5 p.m. then Texas Tech.

In other games yesterday, No. 1 UCLA edged Texas Tech, 3-2, and Long Beach State shut out Texas, 2-0.
