Hilo reaches state
soccer semifinal

At Pearl City, the Baldwin Bears got a second chance but it was the Hilo Vikings who advanced to today's semifinals of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Boys State Soccer Championships with a 2-1 win in overtime on penalty kicks.

Baldwin had lost its opening-round game to Castle Wednesday, but the Knights forfeited the win after discovering they had used an ineligible player.

Hilo outscored Baldwin on penalty kicks, 3-2. The Vikings got goals from Kumu Belcher, Brian Shinjo and Mo'i Kaneali'i.

Due to engineering problems at Aloha Stadium, today's matches will be played at Mililani and Pearl City High Schools. Whether Aloha Stadium will be used for tomorrow's games hasn't been decided.

Pearl City 3, King Kekaulike 0:

Also at Pearl City, the Chargers scored on an own goal and a penalty kick by Gerald Horn in the first half. Jason Mangonon added a goal in the second half in the shutout of Na Alii.

Iolani 2, Aiea 1:

At Mililani, Duke Hashimoto's blast past goalie Brendan Tottori in the 53rd minute gave the Raiders the quarterfinal win over Na Alii.

Mililani 2, Hawaii Prep 0:

Also at Mililani, Barney Beter scored off a pass from Kurt Kagawa Robbie Philipp added another goal as the Trojans blanked Ka Makani.

Consolation bracket

Kauai 4, Castle 3:

The Red Raiders reached tomorrow's consolation championship game by edging the Knights on penalty kicks.

A deflection off a Knight defender into his own goal evened the game at three. Kauai goal keeper Ryan Shiba made two big saves in the penalty-kick phase as the Red Raiders converted four penalty kicks to two for the Knights.

Leilehua 2, Kealakehe 0:

At Pearl City, Jared Terry scored the Mules' first goal eight minutes into the second half and Kenneth Dumlao followed with another at 62:20 to reach the consolation championship game.

Roosevelt, Waianae meet
again in playoffs

Roosevelt defeated Waianae in an Iolani Classic consolation game in December.

But Rough Rider coach Jon Chung said that outcome should have no bearing on tonight's Oahu Interscholastic Association basketball playoff game between the two schools.

"They played everybody and we played everybody in that game," Chung said.

"Waianae is a very disciplined team that plays good defense."

Roosevelt, Leilehua, Mililani and Moanalua won first-round games last night to advance to quarterfinal contests tonight against seeded teams.

Van Dorsey scored 19 points to help host Roosevelt power past Nanakuli, 73-47.

"I'm real happy we played as a team tonight," Chung said. "It didn't matter who scored. We found the open man.

"I'm also happy with the way we dealt with their press."

The Rough Riders (8-2) meet the Seariders (6-2) at 6 at Castle tonight.

Anthony Sandobal had 10 points for Nanakuli.The Golden Hawks ended their season 4-5.
