Scholastic honors
The American Association of University Women-Windward Branch has given nursing scholarships to Myra Leah R. Baskins and Cherylann Ching of Kapiolani Community College, and to Rita G. Jenkins and Tonya Kellam of Hawaii Pacific University.Other recipients include Nga Nguyen and Celeste K. Parker of Hawaii Pacific; Kaitlin M. Palmer, Brigham Young University-Hawaii; and Christie M. Raymond of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona.
Cecily Quinajon, a graduate of Waiakea High School, received a $1,000 scholarship from Big Island Candies Foundation, which is funded by the Hapuna Round Up Golf Tournament.
The University of Idaho has awarded scholarships to Charissa C. Lee of Hanapepe; Du M. Luu of Honolulu; Brandon K. Milliken of Kailua-Kona; Patrick A. Sweeney of Koloa; and Dionisio D. Ramos of Wahiawa.
Janice M. Corsino, an art resource teacher at Assets School in Honolulu, won a $500 runner-up prize for herself and her school from the national Educator's Award for Advancing Special Education Through the Arts, funded by the P. Buckley Moss Foundation for Children's Education.
American Savings Bank has awarded $3,000 scholarships to Tenille Ah Choy of the University of Hawaii; Melissa Hangai of Chaminade University; Joy Koga of BrighamYoung University; and Alisha Moreno of Hawaii Pacific.
Leeward Community College has selected Kathleen Christensen, an education major, and Lena Hasan, a liberal arts major, as the recipients of the 1999 annual outstanding scholar awards.
Tina M. Vincent, a Washington State University student from Kaawa, has received a $500 Washington State Federation of Garden Clubs scholarship in landscape architecture.
Students from Hawaii won top honors in a 1999 National History Day contest in which they competed against more than 2,000 from intermediate and high schools across the United States.
Winning second place were Katrina Niehaus and Meredith Narrowe of Seabury Hall and Erin Tanaka of Kekaulike High on Maui. In fifth place were Darren Salomons and Auguste Toluta'u of Kahuku, who also won for outstanding project from Hawaii in the senior division.
Special prize winners included Jessica Scibilia, Ashley Kitabayashi and Elizabeth Hartnett of Wheeler Intermediate School and Ryan Turin of Kahuku.
Outstanding special project winners in the junior division were Genevieve Story and Jacquelyn Grace of King Intermediate, who were invited to perform at the Smithsonian Museum of American History.
Michael Minh Pham, a Punahou graduate now majoring in biophysics at Johns Hopkins University, has been selected to receive research support through the Provost's Undergraduate Awards for Research and Excellence.
Dean Gushi Jr. of Honolulu has received a $2,000 academic scholarship and $1,500 basketball grant to attend Graceland College in Iowa.
Ryan Woodward of Mililani has received a $1,750 scholarship to attend Graceland College. He also has a $2,000 volleyball grant.
Other scholarship recipients include Kristen Takemura of Ewa Beach, awarded $1,500; Kyle Williamson of Mililani, awarded a $2,000 volleyball grant; and Robert Sylva Jr., awarded a $1,000 student leader grant.
The Hawaii Emergency Physician Education Foundat ion has awarded $1,000 scholarships to four Windward Oahu students: Chad Castro and Angela Scott of Kalaheo High, Uaonani Kalawai'a of Castle, and Laurie-Jean Martin of Kailua.
Central Pacific Bank has awarded eight $2,000 scholarships in its 45th-anniversary essay contest: "Life in Hawaii in 1954."
The school of each fourth- or fifth-grader has also received $1,000 from the bank.

The Hawaiian Collectors Association Inc. has awarded $500 scholarships to Scott K. Sato, a graduate of Kapaa High School, and Nathan Chi-Hwa Lee, formerly of Kalani.
Cheryl Ulep of Kalakaua Middle School has placed second in the nation in the International Aviation Art Contest. The contest is sponsored by the state Department of Transportation.
Gentry Homes Ltd. has selected nine graduating seniors for $500 scholarships. It has also provided a $1,000 scholarship fund for Hale O Ulu School in Ewa Beach.

April Torikai of Hilo High School has been included in the United States Achievement Academy yearbook, which is published nationally, for winning in the history and government category.
