TALE of two Hall of Famers: Before yesterday's Pro Bowl, new Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana agreed to sign anything (within reason) for a $150 contribution to the American Cancer Society. Restaurateur Don Murphy got a San Francisco 49er helmet signed to auction off on behalf of the UH football program at his annual auction. He reports that there were several hundred people lined up to get Joe's autograph, which should net a tidy bundle for the Cancer Society ... Then there was the group of fans who were trying to get Marcus Allen's autograph -- for free -- and they were met with a hail of negativity, topped when the former running back fairly yelled at one persistent woman, spraying her with saliva in the process. "Well, you don't have to spit on me," she complained as others looked on aghast ... Not all stars are

THE roundabout controversy rages worldwide. Kathy Mcdougall e-mails from Bahrain, "Am I reading your column correctly? The mayor is suggesting roundabouts? He surely must be kidding." She continues, "Some of the most horrific accidents happen on these roundabouts (but) the Bahrainis are getting smart and changing from roundabouts to straight roads with traffic signals." ... Jesse Goodman read of the roundabouts in our online edition and states, "You are so right!! Clearwater, Fla., just opened its roundabout at the entrance to Clearwater Beach, to the tune of $10 million and the number of complaints are mounting daily" with accidents, delays and confusion ... And Lou Torraca tells how the roundabout mention gave him a good laugh as he remembered his first one on being assigned to an air base in England. When he came to it he panicked, hit the accelerator and drove right across it. "Fortunately," he writes, "it was a nice low, grass covered one, the traffic was light, and all I lost was a little dignity -- and the rider who was going to go with me to London."
Right you are
ATTORNEY Mark Davis recounted at Hank's Cafe that he'd played tennis Saturday morning with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia at Punahou Courts. Davis, a self-described "flaming liberal," kept hitting balls to the conservative Scalia's left, figuring he'd not get there. Alas, Davis had his clock cleaned -- remember, justice can be backhandedWHEN the Hawaiian Legal Auxiliary learned that Maureen Scalia, wife of the Supreme Court Justice, was a lover of contemporary art, they took her immediately to The Contemporary Museum in Makiki Heights for a tour of the gallery exhibitions and sculpture garden. The Museum's Louise King Lanzilotti hosted the tour group, which included her mother, Anne King, wife of Federal District Judge Sam King ...
