New Year sumoThe newly promoted komusubi danced away from Akebono's charge at the edge of the ring in the day's penultimate bout at Ryogoku Kokugikan and then sent the 235-kg grand champion diving to the ring's surface with a well-timed twist down to the left.
While Akebono remained the tournament's co-leader with Musoyama at 8-1, Miyabiyama, 22, wrestling at the highest rank of his young career, improved to 7-2 to join sekiwake Takanonami and maegashira wrestlers Chiyotenzan and Kyokutenho of Mongolia in the chase pack.
In Monday's other key bout, sekiwake Musoyama charged low against Kotonowaka (4-5) and shoved the No. 2 maegashira over the straw ridge for his share of the lead while rekindling his hope for promotion to sumo's second highest rank of ozeki.
Yokozuna Takanohana, meanwhile, was tripped up by komusubi Tosanoumi (4-5), who slipped to the side at the face-off and slapped the grand champion down to his third loss of the tourney, failing to close the gap between him and the leaders.
In other bouts, sekiwake Takanonami threw over Tochinonada (5-4) from inside control on the belt for his seventh win - three shy of the 10 he needs to regain the ozeki status he lost after going 6-9 in November.
Also at sumo's third highest rank, sekiwake Kaio (5-4) ended a two-day losing streak at Toki's expense, backing the top maegashira out of the ring to an eighth loss.
Ozeki Dejima (6-3), who opened the 15-day tourney with three losses over the first four days, pulled down sekiwake Tochiazuma (5-4) for his fifth win in a row to keep his own championship hopes alive - at least, mathematically.
The other holder of sumo's second-highest rank and defending champion in the New Year tourney Chiyotaikai twisted Kotonishiki (2-7) over for his fifth win.
Earlier, Kyokutenho, a No. 13 maegashira from Mongolia, was flipped over by Minatofuji (4-5) for his second loss of the tourney, but still remains only one step behind the leaders.
Kyokutenho's compatriot and stablemate Kyokushuzan, however, got run over by 10th-ranked Takatoriki (3-6), who shoved the No. 6 maegashira flat out the ring for a seventh loss.
