I came to the Star-Bulletin newsroom after 10 years as a free-lancer in Honolulu, but it was already a very familiar place, as many of my colleagues here had been fellow Ka Leo O Hawaii alumni or co-workers from elsewhere. The thing I enjoy about working at the SB is being truly treated like a professional. I can say that I was rarely, if ever, questioned or "second-guessed," on my contributions to the paper. Many of my best photos from my years at the SB came from the trust that others had in my abilities, the trust put in my "voice."
I came across this marionette makers' stall in Mandalay during
a vacation abroad this year. In the light of violence by the
government against monks, students and northern tribes
in Myanmar, the puppets to me became a symbol of all
of those who had been beaten and jailed there.
A Christmas Day rescue was shot from the "flying bridge"
of a Coast Guard cutter in 6-8 foot seas north of Kahuku.
The digital shot was transmitted via cell phone on deadline.
The Hokule'a crew trains off of Koko Head
for a summer voyage this year to Rapa Nui.
