FUKUOKA -- Ozeki Dejima hit the front with a clinical victory at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament on Tuesday, but "sanyaku" rivals Tochiazuma and Tosanoumi both ran into yokozuna brick walls and lost their overnight share of the lead.

Dejima, who won his only Emperor's Cup in the Nagoya tourney this summer, had little trouble with veteran Terao (3-7) at Fukuoka Kokusai Center, quickly wrapping up the No. 4 maegashira and muscling him out of the ring to boost his record to 9-1 in the 15-day meet.

Yokozuna Takanohana, already with 20 Emperor's Cups in his trophy cabinet, showed no ill effects from his well-documented hand injury as he got a left-hand clamp on komusubi Tosanoumi and frog-marched his opponent out to improve to 7-3.

Tosanoumi (8-2) got off one of his trademark strong charges and latched onto the throat of the yokozuna, but Takanohana went to the memory bank and, displaying excellent lower-body technique, slipped to the side and went to work on the belt for a bread-and-butter win.

Meanwhile, Tochiazuma caught Musashimaru (7-3) in a nasty mood and took a number of slaps upside the head from the giant Samoan-born yokozuna, who followed up sharply by barging the sekiwake over the straw bails and into a three-way tie for second at 8-2.

No. 5 maegashira Toki also improved to 8-2 with a routine win over 12th-ranked Tochinonada, who slipped to 7-3.

Ozeki Chiyotaikai, meanwhile, looked every inch the immovable object as he ignored a series of facial slaps from Asanosho (2-8) but plodded inexorably forward to plaster the No. 3 maegashira into the front-row cushions, upping his record to 7-3 in the process.

Struggling ozeki Takanonami pulled out a win in a marathon bout with fifth-ranked Kotonowaka (4-6) to even his record to 5-5, while sekiwake Kaio triumphed in a slapfest with No. 1 maegashira Tamakasuga (2-8) to notch his sixth victory.

Musoyama also chalked up his sixth win as he won a battle of komusubi with veteran Akinoshima, who slipped to 2-8 and will face demotion ahead of the New Year tourney in Tokyo.

It was a mixed day for the Mongolian wrestlers, with No. 3 maegashira Kyokushuzan pulling down top-ranked Miyabiyama (4-6) to record just his second win, while No. 8 maegashira Kyokutenho was flipped to his sixth loss by 11th-ranked Otsukasa (5-5).
