the Endeavour is on a
4-year globe-circling tourAs day dawned over Honolulu Harbor today, a sight from days past graced Pier 9.
A replica of the HM Bark Endeavour, the ship that carried Capt. James Cook around the globe from 1768 to 1771, arrived here yesterday as part of a four-year around-the-world tour.
Operating as a working 18th-century sailing vessel, the Endeavour replica has sailed more than 35,000 nautical miles on 88 voyages while completing tours of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the Atlantic islands and the east coast of North America.
Before docking in Honolulu yesterday, the Endeavour had been on the Big Island, where it first arrived in Kealakekua Bay.
The ship will be open for tours at Pier 9 at Aloha Tower Marketplace from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until Sunday, when it departs.
Admission is $10; children's tickets are $5, and a family pass is $25.
There will also be a special reception Wednesday aboard the Endeavour.
The reception, sponsored by the Hawaiian Historical Society, will be from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Visitors will be piped aboard by bagpipers and drummers and partake of refreshments catered by Gordon Biersch Brewing Co.
The Endeavour's captain or chief executive will offer a special welcome, and a crew member or guide will give tours of the ship.
Cost for the reception is $150, $75 of which is a tax-deductible contribution to help support the historical society.
