Hawaii hotels, restaurants and destinations won some prestigious awards that they can use to boost their promotions into the next millennium.

The American Automobile Association, through AAA Hawaii, named 12 resorts and six restaurants for its Four Diamond awards. Two resorts, the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows and the Grand Wailea Resort Hotel and Spa, won their Four Diamond for the first time. Oahu has three repeat winners: Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki, Hilton Hawaiian Village and Hyatt Regency Waikiki.

In addition to the Mauna Lani, Big Island winners were Hilton Waikoloa Village, Orchid at Mauna Lani and Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel-Mauna Kea Resort.

Winners on Kauai were Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort & Spa and Princeville Resort. Maui winners, in addition to the Grand Wailea, were Hyatt Regency Maui and Maui Prince Hotel & Makena Golf Course.

The restaurants, all repeat winners, were: Swan Court in Lahaina; Anuenue Dining Room, Kapalua; Seasons, Wailea; Bali by the Sea, Waikiki; Orchids, Waikiki; and Azul, Kapolei.

Separately, the November issue of Conde Nast Traveler magazine said its 25,000-plus readers selected Maui as the best tropical island in the world, with the Big Island in sixth place. Hawaiian Airlines was ranked fifth best domestic airline and the Grand Wailea Resort was named top spa resort.
