Hawaii cornerback Quincy LeJay has taken back two interceptions for touchdowns, but neither was as pretty as the pick he procured in Saturday night's 34-14 loss to Texas Christian. RAINBOW NOTEBOOK
Quincy comes up big
"That was one of the most beautiful interceptions I've ever seen as a coach," UH defensive coordinator Greg McMackin said. "That was big-time all the way."
The interception in the second quarter stopped a TCU drive at the Hawaii 10. LeJay also managed nine tackles against the TCU defense, two of them for losses on option plays. LeJay also had a hurry and two pass breakups.
"It was easily his best game of the year," McMackin said. "He did a great job of recognizing their speed option. After a while, they went away from him."
Hitting the deck
At times, senior quarterback Dan Robinson must have thought it was last year all over again. In a numbing 30-20 defeat to New Mexico 53 weekends ago, Robinson threw the football a school-record 57 times. After the game, he said he was knocked down on 25 occasions, a game he still felt by season's end.Well, TCU left a similar calling card. Robinson was sacked three times by the league's best front seven. He also was hurried 10 times and knocked down at least a dozen others.
In the second quarter, Robinson was sandwiched on a busted play, injuring his back. But he stayed in there until the end.
"Dan Robinson is going to be sore tomorrow," TCU head coach Dennis Franchione said. "But give him credit. We kept knocking him down and he kept getting back up. He's a tough guy."
Not always special
What has been a bright spot for most of this season was something of a blight Saturday night. An ill-advised kickoff return, a missed extra point after Hawaii was flagged for excessive celebration, two missed field goals of 50 and 51 yards and a nasty late hit out of bounds by Daniel Reed on kick coverage had special teams coach Dennis McKnight seeing red.
Hawaii is still rated among the top 50 in several special teams categories. Punter Chad Shrout is No. 22, averaging 42.58 yards a kick. Jamal Garland is rated No. 45 nationally (9.7 yards) in punt returns and No. 31 in kickoff returns (23.7 yards). The Rainbows are also tied for 13th in net punting at 39.2 yards a game.
Inside the numbers
Wide receiver Dwight Carter is ranked No. 8 nationally in receiving yards, averaging 104.88 a game. He is also tied for 15th in receptions a game at 6.7. Quarterback Dan Robinson is No. 11 in total yards, averaging 299 a game, while Hawaii's passing attack is rated No. 13 with a 315.1-yard average.
Injury update
Hawaii emerged from the game relatively injury free. Robinson has a bruised back, but will be able to play. Backup receiver Ryan Gray injured his Achilles tendon in practice and could miss the road trip to San Jose State.
