HVCB, ad agency vie for tourism contract
The Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau has a competitor for the $38 million-a-year job of marketing Hawaii to the world as a tourist destination.When the deadline for proposals was reached late yesterday, the Hawaii Tourism Authority had received two bids, one from the HVCB and one from the California offices of a big Japanese advertising agency, Dentsu Inc.
Bob Fishman, HTA chief executive officer, said today the proposals will be examined and interviews with the bidders will be held about the middle of September, with a decision to be made by the end of the month.
Ala Moana opens upper level section
Ala Moana Center today opened the second section of its new upper level, above the mall level between Center Court and the Sears store.Stores in the new section include Ann Taylor, Arden B., Cinnamon Girl, Godivas Chocolatier, Illuminations, Origins and The Walking Company. Opening soon will be Afterthoughts, D*va, Foot Locker, Honolulu Coffee Co. and Town and Country Store. The shopping center's management said Banana Republic and The Gap will expand their mall-level stores into the upper level.
Ala Moana opened the first phase of the upper-level development, a group of stores and restaurants between Liberty House and Center Court, earlier this year.
Bankoh completes Australian bank deal
Bank of Hawaii has completed its purchase of 5.8 million shares of the Bank of Queensland in Australia.Bankoh said yesterday that half of the purchase price of $22.85 million was paid in cash, with the rest due Feb. 27, 2001.
The purchase of new shares, on top of an investment made earlier, lifts the Hawaii bank's holding to about 17 percent of the Australian bank.
