Pro surf meet

Hawaii's Shane Dorian and Ross Williams advanced to the third round, but 12 of the Association of Surfing Professionals top 16 seeds fell to lower-ranked competitors in the opening round of the French T&C Lacanau Pro yesterday at Lacanau, France.

Sunny Garcia and Kalani Robb of Hawaii were among the first-round upset victims and must surf through round two in order to advance to the third round.

Andy Irons lost his first-round heat but beat Beau Emerton in one of yesterday's second-round heats to reach the third round.

Hawaii's Shawn Sutton and Conan Hayes also won their first round heats.

In the women's competition, Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard and Megan Abubo won in the first round.

Lewis wins junior national sailing title

With two victories on the final day of competition, Hawaii's Andy Lewis easily won the Smythe Trophy as the nation's top junior (13-18 years) sailor yesterday.

Lewis, representing the Waikiki Yacht Club, won seven of the 10 races this week on Kaneohe Bay against 19 other sailors, finishing with 13 points. Second in the singlehanded Laser competition was Steve Brown of La Jolla, Calif., an incoming freshman at Hawaii, with 22 points.

In the 420 class, the Oak Park, Ill., team of Evan Thompson and Pat Hitchins earned the Bemis Trophy for doublehanded sailors with 24 points. The Hawaii team of Mike Cervantes and Ethan Creps finished fifth with 84 points.

St. Louis opens season ranked in third poll

Defending Prep Bowl champion St. Louis takes on Chugiak of Alaska tomorrow night in one of 21 games that open the high school football preseason this weekend.

Yesterday, the Crusaders were ranked in their third national poll, coming in at No. 7 in the Tony Bianco Top 25. St. Louis and Chugiak, a semifinalist in the Alaska state playoffs last season, meet at 7 p.m. at Aloha Stadium.

Saturday's 7:30 p.m. game at Aloha Stadium pits rivals Farrington and Kamehameha.

USGA gives $30,000 to Hawaii junior golf

The United States Golf Association presented a $30,000 check to the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association yesterday.

Mary Bea Porter-King, president of the island group, said some of the money will fund developmental programs, such as teaching clinics. The rest of the grant will help pay administrative costs.

The HSJGA became Hawaii's first-ever formally recognized statewide junior golf association when it was founded in March 1998.

Pep rally Saturday for Wahine volleyball team

The University of Hawaii women's volleyball team will be introduced at a pep rally this Saturday from 3-5 p.m. at Ala Moana Center Stage.

The UH cheerleaders, Rainbow Band, Rainbow Dancers and Alan "Rubber Man'' Hackbarth will perform at the event.

A pair of volleyball season tickets are among the prizes to be given away.

Wilson takes Big Island amateur golf title

Fourteen-year-old Gabriel Wilson won the 76th Big Island Amateur Championship Sunday, besting some 100 other golfers at the Waikoloa Kings' Course.

The teen-ager battled back from an eight-stroke deficit going into the final round to finish four strokes ahead of 1989 champion Charles Park. Wilson carded a 72-228 to finish with his fourth title of the summer; he won his age division at the PGA Junior Series, PGA Maxfli and Cindy Flom Junior Championship.

In other divisions, Wedemeyer Au posted a three-shot victory over Willie Wilton in the A Flight, while Kris Laguire was a five-stroke winner over R.J. Higgins in the B Flight.

Fujishige earns a trip to New York for essay

Colin Fujishige's essay about the late tennis legend Arthur Ashe has earned the 10-year-old Kaneohe resident a trip to New York City next weekend.

Fujishige, who competes in the USTA's National Junior Tennis League, was one of 10 winners in the nationwide contest. He will attend the Arthur Ashe Kids Day Weekend, Aug. 27-29, at the National Tennis Center.

Women's Equality Day celebrated with fun run

The fifth Women's Equality Day Races are set for Saturday at Watts Field, Schofield Barracks.

Sponsored by the 703rd Military Intelligence Brigade, the 7 a.m. event has a two-mile run/walk and a four-mile run.

The cost is $6 for those wanting a T-shirt, free for those not wanting a shirt.

Helen "Gigi'' Smith, a member of the women's professional baseball league during World War II, is the guest speaker.
