top journalism awardsThe Honolulu Star-Bulletin took the top print award for public service reporting at the third annual Society of Professional Journalists' Excellence in Journalism awards for its "State of the Unions" stories on the influence of public worker unions in Hawaii.
"State of the Unions" also won the award for government reporting. The Star-Bulletin won a total of 12 first-place awards. The Honolulu Advertiser won four top awards. Honolulu Magazine got three, Honolulu Weekly two top awards. The Maui News, The Associated Press and Hawaii Business Magazine got one first-place award apiece.
In television, KGMB-TV won the award for public service reporting for a series on breast cancer. The CBS affiliate won five top awards. KITV won three first-place awards, followed by KHNL with two awards and KHON with one.
Hawaii Public Radio won three awards for radio reporting.
Finalists were also selected in many categories.
1998 Entries were judged by the San Diego SPJ chapter.
Proceeds from the awards competition help pay for the SPJ internship program.
