UH Wahine fifth in
sailing nationals

The Hawaii women's sailing team was in fifth place going into today's second round of the International Collegiate Yacht Racing Association national championship regatta at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Dartmouth led the way with 42 points after yesterday's races, followed by Tufts (50), Connecticut (53), Stanford (59) and the Wahine (64).

Laura Rehg and Molly O'Bryan are the UH skippers, with crew members Ursula Austin and Natalia Tangalin.

The regatta winds up tomorrow.

Swim instruction

Hawaii Rainbows swimming and diving coach Sam Freas and his staff will conduct a comprehensive swim instruction series and two swim camps this spring and summer at the UH Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

There will be Learn-to-Swim sessions for beginners 4 years old and up; a Flip and Fun Camp for boys and girls ages 7-14 that includes springboard diving, water polo, swimming skill enhancement, synchronized swimming, gymnastics and trampoline, and Competitive Swim Camps for swimmers ages 8-18.

Hawaii players invited

Former Hawaii high school standouts Keoni DeRenne and Dane Sardinha are among 33 top collegians invited to the Team USA baseball trials next month at Tucson, Ariz.

DeRenne, an Iolani graduate, is a sophomore shortstop at Arizona. Sardinha, a catcher at Pepperdine, is a Kamehameha Schools graduate.

Rainbow baseball camp

Openings are still available for youngsters interested in attending any of the Rainbow Baseball Camps conducted by UH coach Les Murakami and his staff at Rainbow Stadium this summer.

There are hitting camps ($80) and regular camps ($130). For information on dates and age groups, call 956-6247.

UH's Hill, Wong recognized

Junior Katie Hill of Hawaii is a second-team selection on the American Water Polo Coaches Association All-America team for the second successive year, it was announced yesterday. UH Senior Michelle Wong earned All-America honorable mention.

League tennis tourney

More than 250 players on Hawaii's top 23 teams will compete in the USA League Tennis Mixed Doubles and Seniors Sectional Championships on Saturday and Sunday at the Turtle Bay Hilton Resort in Kahuku.

The teams will vie for spots in the national championships.

UH-Hilo raises $122,000

More than $122,000 was collected in April during Hawaii-Hilo's month-long Vulcan Athletic Fund Drive, surpassing the previous high by nearly $20,000.

Proceeds from other traditional fundraising events will be added to the total to reach the 1999 goal of $175,000, UH-Hilo athletic director Bill Trumbo said.
