More Bronster backlash
Bronster, Anzai votes arouse suspicion
Excuse me, senators who voted against Earl Anzai and Margery Bronster: Do you see stupid on my forehead?Earl Anzai: He did a difficult job remarkably well. Remember the states' fiscal condition when he began? Remember the alarming headlines? Today, the state may not have much money, but it pays its bills, no thanks to special interest, pork barrel politicians.
Margery Bronster: Didn't anyone ever tell her not to stare too long at Henry Peters and Dickie Wong? They're not arrogant for nothing.
If they are not behind Bronster's rejection, then explain this:
1) Why did Ted Sakai (public safety director) sail through confirmation despite the prison suicides, brutality lawsuits and over-time problems at Corrections?Rosie Kimura
2) Why did Susan Chandler's (human services director) confirmation stir only a ripple from the senators despite public outrage over Reubyne Buentipo, Peter Boy Kema and Cedra Edwards?

Freshman senators showed their true colors
It is truly disappointing that the freshmen senators, elected on the promise of change, quickly showed us that they are no different when it comes to playing the game of backroom wheeling and dealing.Attorney General Margery Bronster had the courage to do what was right for the people of Hawaii. This is far more than can be said of Senate President Mizuguchi and his factionalized Bishop Estate-backed henchmen.

Bronster offered hope to those hurt by estate
Thousands of residents have suffered from the stifling heavy-handed control of the Bishop Estate over our lives, homes and communities. Bronster was our hope that finally something was being done.Lee Manfredi
14 senators should be behind bars
Margery Bronster had the guts to challenge the good ol' boys. What stood in her way? Fourteen senators obstructing justice. We need 14 more beds at Oahu Community Correctional Facility.Foster Hull

"I've heard Council staffers talking about Chairman Mufi McCarthy, feeling that's the nature of the inquisition down there."

Bishop Museum records our history for generations to come. It preserves and protects in its collections the story of our land, our values and our indigenous people. It also is a major part of our state's education system, providing science and cultural learning experiences to more than 50,000 students annually.
Please join me in supporting the museum; call your legislator, make a donation, become a member, or just go visit the wonderful exhibits. Urge your friends and neighbors to do the same. Let's all pitch in before it is too late, and our history is lost forever.

Politicians don't care about all the people
Governor Cayetano says our lawmakers are shifting back toward their labor roots. And he would seem to be following suit. They just don't get it. They are supposed to be governing, crafting laws that benefit ALL of us, not just union members or the Democratic Party faithful. What about the rest of us? Independents, Republicans, Greens, Libertarians, small-business people, the self-employed, retirees, students. What are we, chopped liver? This is the change they touted throughout the election?
I want my vote back. They really don't care.

Guns don't kill people; there are too many kids!
Kids and cars. Kids and drugs. Kids and guns. Kids and homemade bombs. Kids and alcohol. Kids and cigarettes. Kids and school. Kids and their parents. Kids and the police. What is the connection? Kids! Maybe if we got rid of kids, we wouldn't have any problems. Too simple? Maybe, but whatever happened to Zero Population Growth?

Kids having guns can only lead to tragedy
Why do kids need to buy guns? The retailers who sell guns should think about what these kids are planning to do with the guns.President Clinton is doing a good job by trying to pass a law changing the age limit from 18 to 21, but I'm even baffled as to why a 21-year-old person would need to buy guns. If there were no guns for sale, there would be less crime.
Guns should be banned from anyone not in law enforcement. Be rid of guns? I know, only in a perfect world. But it's never too late.

Racial epithets should be banned in schools
Your April 23 headline on racism in the schools posed the query, "Is trouble brewing?" Brewing? As in, just getting started?I moved to Oahu in 1973, a naive young father of two children. My son and daughter, like thousands of other Caucasian children, found out on the first day of school that the term "haole" was usually preceded with words such as "stupid," "f----ing" or "dumb."
This goes beyond, "Kids say mean things to other kids." It is the perpetuation of a racial irritant.
Schools must implement a zero tolerance policy that forbids any use of racial slurs or other forms of racial baiting. If we are going to have laws against hate crimes, shouldn't rules to prevent the incubation of such crimes begin in the schools?
