On The Scene
"THE PRODUCERS" OPENS AT DHT:
It was a great night for cast members Daniel James Kunkel (Franz Liebkind), left, Don Nahaku (Leo Bloom), Renee Noveck (Ula), Dennis Proulx (Max Bialystock) and Twan Matthews (Carmen Ghia) as they celebrated the opening of Diamond Head Theatre's long-anticipated production of "The Producers" May 16 at the post-show cast party at Ryan's. "The Producers" has been extended through June 8. Call 733-0277. (For a review, see yesterday's Today section or visit starbulletin.com/2008/05/26/features/story03.html.)
DHT board member Dr. John Magauran, right, talked with cosmetic surgeon Dr. Shim Ching in the sponsors' tent during intermission. The office door is not part of the show's set, but is seen on the cover of the playbill.
DHT Artistic Director John Rampage, wearing leis, welcomed state Sen. Wil Espero, left, state Rep. John Mizuno, state Rep. Tom Brower, Michael Titterton, Madeleine McKay and Tim Guard to the pre-show sponsors' reception. Rampage does double duty as director and choreographer of the show.
MANOA VOICES CELEBRATE:
Hula dancer Ku'ulei Hazlewood joined Manoa Voices -- Saphronia Smith, left, Justin Ka'upu, Rosanna Perch and Chadwick Pang -- to celebrate the release of the group's self-titled debut album with an acoustic concert May 17 at the University of Hawaii-Manoa. Manoa Voices won the Ka Himeni Ana acoustic singing contest in 2007, so performing without microphones and an PA system was not a problem. (For a review of the album: starbulletin.com/2008/05/23/features/ records.html.)
"PORTS OF CALL" WAS A BALL:The dress code was "black-tie or formal ethnic attire," so auction chairwoman Uli Cutter, center, wore an Austrian dirndl as she supervised the silent auction at "Ports of Call," the 11th Annual Symphony Ball, May 17 at the Hawaii Convention Center. Kelly Sanders, left, Jeff Mintor, Roseann Grippo, Carissa Clark, Joe Shorba and David Shamblin joined her in celebrating the success of one of the year's best big-scale fundraising events.
