Quake creates a ghost town
THAT WAS quite a wake-up call on Sunday morning. My nocturnal schedule meant that I had only been asleep for about three hours when the first earthquake struck at 7:07 a.m. The second jolt almost sent me flying out of my bed, but after getting a drink of water and cursing the sudden loss of power, I simply went back to sleep.
Almost four hours later, I awoke to a flood of voice mails and text messages that provided some insight into what was happening. Other than a brief stop at Visionary Related Entertainment's studios to give Frank B. Shaner, Ed Kanoi and Sean Lynch a live update about what was going on outside, I spent most of my day getting reactions from local residents.
That evening, Honolulu was a ghost town, even by late-night standards. I expected Flash Hansen, Matty Hazelgrove and Justin Yoshino would have to cancel their "Bacardi Pool Party" at the Sheraton Waikiki, but the extended power outage also meant events like "Casa" and "Faded 5 Sundays" were canceled. I couldn't find a single Zippy's, Jack in the Box or Taco Bell open after 1 a.m. And streetlights from Kalihi to Kapahulu were still malfunctioning at 3 a.m. ...
YOU CAN bet Paul Ogata is already working on some earthquake jokes for his homecoming performances this week.
I've already told you about Friday's "The Late Show with David Letterman Showcase" at Pipeline Cafe, where Ogata will share the stage with Andy Bumatai, Mel Cabang, Kento, Jordan Savusa, Shawn Felipe, Elroy Ruiz, Kermet Apio, Paul Morrissey and Erik Griffin. Tickets for the 7 p.m. show are $25 and $45.
You can also catch Ogata tomorrow at Brew Moon, where he'll perform with veteran "Late Show" warm-up comedian and talent coordinator Eddie Brill. Cover is $15; call 593-0088 ...
