Lina Girl is up and around promoting again, but this time no food is involved. KCCN FM 100's radio personality is the new spokeswoman for GEAR UP Hawaii's TV and radio campaign. The acronym stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, and the program's aim is to increase the number of low-income college students and to educate their parents in preparing for higher education. ...

WHILE HEADING to thirtyninehotel last Friday, a friend and I passed Urban Nomad at 1023 Smith St. It was around 11 p.m., but leave it to us to find another place still open for shopping. Owner Frieda Hulse specializes in vintage and designer wear, so check it out if you're en route to some of the new Chinatown clubs. Her usual business hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. But on First Fridays she stays open until the last night owls go home. ...

ANYONE GOING to Maui next week? The workers at Roselani Ice Cream will create the "Ultimate Roselani Ice Cream Sundae" at the County of Maui's Centennial Celebration, "Big Bash," on Aug. 20 at the War Memorial complex. Roselani Ice Cream maker Cathy Nobriga Kim says about 100 gallons of ice cream, along with plenty of chocolate sauce and cherries, will be used to create the masterpiece. "It's reminiscent of the good old days of the old Maui County Fair. And we think it's very appropriate to bring it back for Maui's 100th Birthday," Kim said. ... For those who can't make it to Maui, the Made in Hawaii Festival will be held from Aug. 19 to 21 at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall and Arena. There'll be lots of food to check out, plus entertainment by Raiatea Helm, Melveen Leed, Del Beazley, Maunalua, 'Ale'a, Aunty Genoa Keawe, Nathan Aweau, Marlene Sai, Frank DeLima and more. ...

WITH THE recent changes in the Today department, I will be making the move from column writing to tackle more production and design duties. Writing a column has been a great experience that put me in touch with many interesting and wonderful people.
