Sean Maekawa, 15, fired a second-round 68 to win yesterday's qualifier for the USGA Amateur Public Links at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course. The junior from Honokaa High School beat out University of Hawaii golfer Jarett Hamamoto by one stroke with a two-round total of 140 to earn the invite to the July tournament in Lebanon, Ohio.

Kim takes women's qualifier: Hilo's Kimberly Kim shot an even-par 72 to win the USGA Women's Amateur Public Links qualifier held yesterday at Wailua Golf Course. Mari Chun placed second with a 73, followed by Cyd Okino and Christina Kim, who both fired a 74.

Jellyfish force Hui Wa'a cancellation

Today's Na Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a outrigger canoe regatta was canceled due to an infestation of tiny box jellyfish in the water.

Hui Wa'a officials did not have time to secure a permit to move the regatta elsewhere. Nearly 1,500 paddlers from 17 clubs were affected.

Hui Wa'a's next three regattas are scheduled for Keehi Lagoon, but officials are uncertain whether the races will be held there, moved or canceled. The association's championships are also scheduled for Keehi on July 23.

The situation will not affect Oahu's other paddling association until next month. The Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association is not scheduled to use the venue until its championships on July 24.
