Lambert, Fonoimoana advance to semifinals

Punahou graduate Mike Lambert and partner Eric Fonoimoana kept their title defense alive, advancing to today's semifinals of the AVP Nissan Series Santa Barbara Open beach volleyball tournament.

Lambert and Fonoimoana, seeded sixth, defeated the team of Mark Williams and Scott Wong, another Punahou product, 16-21, 21-17, 15-6, yesterday. Advancing to the other semifinal is Punahou alum Sean Scott and partner Todd Rogers, who upset the top-seeded team of Stein Metzger (Punahou) and Jake Gibb, 21-15, 21-15.

Gibb-Metzger dropped into a contender's bracket semifinal of the double-elimination event. The other loser-out semifinal features former University of Hawaii player Jason Ring and partner Paul Baxter.

Lynch takes lead at Kona Open

Defending champion John Lynch fired a first-round 68 to take the lead of the Kona Open yesterday at the Kona Country Club.

Amateur Jarett Hamamoto and professionals Regan Lee, Mark Morrison, Kevin Ralbovsky and Darren Summers are in second at 70. Professionals are playing for a first prize of $4,000 with the final round teeing off this morning at 6:45.

» Alex Chu and Tadd Fujikawa will take on Reyn Tanaka and Ryan Perez in the finals of the championship flight at the Francis Hyde Brown Match Play Championship at Ala Wai Golf Course.

The foursome tees off for 36 holes at 7:21 a.m. today.

Frazier speaking at Quarterback Club

University of Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier headlines the program for tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom.

Also speaking are Duncan Macdonald, coach of the Punahou girls state track championship team, and Harvey McInerney, assistant coach of the state champion Kamehameha boys team.

Luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. followed by the noon program. The public is invited.

Handy's 94-Feet of Game clinics return

Former Hawaii basketball standout Phil Handy is bringing his youth clinics back to Honolulu this August, with separate sessions for guards and post players, as well as a four-day camp at the Manoa Valley Recreation Center.

The guard clinic is from 1-4:30 p.m. Aug. 4 and the post clinic is from 1-4:30 p.m. Aug. 5. The Aug. 8-11 camp is from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

The camp and clinics are open to boys and girls, entering grades 7-12, at the intermediate or advance skill level. The cost for the clinic is $65, $150 for the camp.
