» Keoni DeRenne (Iolani, Arizona) has been assigned to the Yakima (Wash.) Bears' roster by the Tucson Sidewinders. This is a paper move, according to Tucson's media relations director, Landon Vincent, because Yakima is in the short-season Northwest League that does not open its season until June. "The good thing is Keoni wasn't sent to Double A, but is in extended spring training right across the street," said Vincent. "The bad thing is he only gets to play in extended spring games. I would think the next time someone gets called up (by the Arizona Diamondbacks) or someone gets injured, Keoni would be back on our roster."
» Kila Ka'aihue (Iolani) is 31-for-78 (.397) in the month of May. The first baseman's .367 batting average is second in the California League to Rancho Cucamonga second baseman Howard Kendrick's .376 mark.
» Lenn Sakata (Kalani, Gonzaga), manager of San Jose in the California League, has the Giants (25-15) in first place in the North Division, 4 1/2 games ahead of second place Bakersfield in the first half. The 140-game league schedule is divided into two halves, with the first-half division winners earning a first-round bye in the playoffs.
» Jaziel Mendoza (Hawaii) was drafted in the first round (12th pick) of the 2005 Frontier League draft by the Ohio Valley Redcoats May 17. The left-hand-hitting outfielder signed Wednesday, a week before the league starts its season.
