Iolani thwarts
upset-minded Punahou

The Punahou Buffanblu are closing the gap, but Iolani is still the best team in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

Kyle Pape poured in 24 points, including six points in the final 1:54, as the visiting Raiders fought off Punahou 52-50 last night.

A capacity crowd in excess of 1,800 watched at Hemmeter Fieldhouse. Iolani improved to 6-0 in ILH play (20-2 overall). Punahou dropped to 4-1 (14-7 overall).

Pape shot 6-for-13 from the field, including 3-for-6 from long distance. Vinny Nip added 14 points for Iolani, ranked No. 1 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10. Pape and Nip led Iolani's offense out of early doldrums. Each made three 3-point shots.

Defense was the difference. Jeremiah Ostrowski finished with 17 points against a swarming Iolani defense. Brenton Lee added 13 points and Kasey Ko tallied 10 for Punahou, ranked second in the Top 10.

Ostrowski, a sophomore guard, made five of his 12 field-goal attempts, including one of four from 3-point distance. He made all four of his free-throw tries, but committed five turnovers.

Two of the giveaways came on offensive fouls.

Jon Takamura, who drew one of Ostrowski's charging calls, came off the bench to anchor Iolani under the glass.

"Jon did a great job on the boards in the second half," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said of the 6-foot-2 junior.

"We played 100 percent. We knew it would be a tough game," said Pape, a 6-1 senior. "We fed off the crowd's energy. We came together tonight as a team."

Punahou, which had lost to Iolani twice in nonconference play, was diligent defensively in the first quarter. The Buffanblu took a 10-7 lead into the second quarter and extended it to 14-9 after a baseline jumper by Ostrowski.

"We were very tentative in the first half. We weren't attacking the basket," Mugiishi said.

With both teams going to 1-3-1 zone defenses briefly, the offenses never quite caught fire. "Punahou's too good a team to show the same thing all the time," Mugiishi said.

Pape got free, however, against Punahou's man defense, and scored consecutive baskets underneath to give Iolani a 16-14 lead with 2:15 left in the second quarter.

Ko tied the game with a layup, but Pape swished a trey from the top of the key to give Iolani the lead for good. The Raiders led at halftime 22-18.

"In the second quarter, we got a little lazy mentally. That allowed us to get screened, and Kyle got open shots," said Ko, a 6-3 senior.

The Raiders attacked the basket more in the second half. Pape, who made nine of 10 attempts from the foul line, made four of them as Iolani opened the third quarter with a 17-8 run. Nip's 3-pointer from the left corner made it 39-26 in favor of Iolani with 47 seconds left in the third.

Punahou responded with a 10-1 run. Ostrowski's steal and layup brought the Buffanblu within 40-36 with 3:29 remaining, but Iolani's defense buckled down. The Raiders pushed the lead to 46-38 after two more free throws by Pape with 1:31 to go.

A 3-pointer from the right corner by Lee cut the lead to 50-47 with 24 seconds left, but a moment later, Nip fed Kawika Shoji for an easy layup. That gave Iolani a 52-47 lead with 10 seconds left.

Ostrowski hit a 3-pointer, his only one of the game, with 3 seconds to play. Iolani let the clock expire without inbounding the ball.

Three losses to Iolani won't break Punahou's drive. "This should boost our confidence. We just have to play like we did in the first quarter," Ko said.
