School's prize goes to troops and charities

Noelani Elementary School in Manoa is using money from a prize the children won to send goodie bags to a Hawaii National Guard unit in Iraq.

The bags are filled with about $1,000 worth of local snacks for the 227 soldiers in the 193rd Aviation Regiment's Company C, said Noelani Principal Fred Yoshinaga.

The money came from a $2,000 cash prize that the school won earlier this year in the Honolulu Board of Water Supply's water ecology awareness contest.

"The students conducted a survey and voted to donate the money to organizations they felt were deserving of recognition for their efforts in working towards the betterment of others," Yoshinaga said.

Another $500 will go to the Institute for Human Service's shelter for women and children in Kalihi. The funds will help buy Christmas gifts for homeless children.

The remaining $500 will go to the Ronald McDonald House in Manoa. Yoshinaga said Noelani has a third-grade student living in the Ronald McDonald House, and her classmates wanted her to have some special gifts for Christmas.

Celebrities to collect Salvation Army gifts

Several television news personalities and other notable individuals will help the Salvation Army collect donations by ringing bells next to the red kettles in front of Wal-Mart on Keeaumoku Street.

On Dec. 18, Louise Kim McCoy of KGMB will collect donations at 1 p.m., followed by Mahealani Richardson of KITV at 2 p.m., Ben Gutierrez of KITV at 3 p.m. and Wally Amos, founder of Famous Amos Cookies, at 4 p.m.
