STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT SCORES

Here are the results for the 2004 Hawaii State Assessment and the Stanford Achievement Test for Hawaii public school students in grades 3, 5, 8 and 10. The tests were taken last spring. (See story.)

Hawaii State Assessment results are expressed as "well below," "approaching," "meets" or "exceeds" state standards for proficiency in reading and math. The test requires writing and critical thinking.

The SAT, a multiple-choice test, helps show how Hawaii students compare with the national average. The test is normed so that 23 percent of students nationwide score "below average," 54 percent are "average" and 23 percent are "above average."
