Hawaii-led U.S. youth team wins world berth

The U.S. Boys Youth Volleyball Team, with three Hawaii players in key roles, defeated Canada yesterday at Mexico City in the championship of the NORCECA Championship.

Iolani junior Kawika Shoji was named the tournament's Best Setter in leading the undefeated Americans to a 25-19, 27-25, 23-17 victory. Recent Kamehameha graduate Adam Tuifagu, the team's libero, was named the tournament's Best Passer.

Also on the team is Punahou sophomore Spencer McLachlin.

The win gives the U.S. a berth in the 2005 World Youth Championships in Russia.

Taise leads team to Mauna Kea Pro-Am

Mauna Kea Resort No. 1, led by pro Jay Taise, won the Mauna Kea Stroke Play Championship Pro-Am at the Mauna Kea Golf Course yesterday by two strokes.

Taise teamed with amateur Charles Park, Alan Nakamoto, Marlene Louchheim and Len Tomosada for a net 15-under 57. The Aloha Section No. 1 team, with pro Ron Castillo Sr., came in second at 59 while Big Island Candies, with pro Kevin Hayashi, was third at 60.

Ron Castillo Jr. captured the low pro prize with a score of 69.

Mililani falls in Pony World Series final

Mililani's run in the Pony League World Series fell short Saturday when the Hawaii team lost to East Cobb (Ga.) 3-1 in the championship game at Washington, Pa.

Mililani managed just one hit off Jake Davies, a single by Dustin Antolin that led off the fifth. Jared Nagai scored Mililani's lone run when scoring from third on Jay Yoshizawa's sacrifice bunt.

Oahu loses in U.S. final: Raleigh, N.C., scored six first-inning runs en route to an 8-1 victory over Oahu in the U.S. championship of the Cal Ripken (12-year-old) World Series Saturday at Aberdeen, Md.

First baseman-pitcher Jarret Arakawa, right fielder Kewby Meyer, second baseman Jordan Oshiro and shortstop Jeremy Fujimoto were named to the United States All-Tournament team. Arakawa and Fujimoto also made the All-Defense team.

Maui Tour to Nelson

Makena Golf course head pro Kirk Nelson had five birdies en route to a 68 and a win on the Maui Tour stop at the Makena North Course.

Duane Pacheco finished with a 1-under 71 to finish second, while Brian Sasada and Clif Council tied for third 72s.

The next Maui Tour event will be held Sept. 19 at The Wailea Gold Course at noon.
