HPU dean Varner wins public relations honors

Hawaii Pacific University dean Helen Varner was named Public Relations Professional of the Year at a ceremony last night by the Hawaii Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Varner is dean of HPU's College of Communication.

The society gave its Hokupaa Award, honoring the chapter's young public relations professional of the year, to Tina McNealey, account executive with Becker Communications Inc.

Winners of Koa Anvil, Koa Hammer and Awards of Excellence included Communications-Pacific Inc. with 11; McNeil Wilson Communications Inc. with four, including best of show; Becker Communications with four; Big Island-based Current Events with four; Stryker Weiner & Yokota Public Relations Inc. with two and Kristen K.C. Bonilla of the University of Hawaii with two. Belt Collins; Chuck Ehrhorn and David Cheever; Writing by Design; Jim Austin; Pepi Nieva; Jeela Ongley; Suzanne Pearce; PacRim Marketing Group Inc. and Hastings & Pleadwell each won one.

PRSA-Hawaii also awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Kahuku High School graduate Andrew Pontti, soon to begin his senior year at Syracuse University.
