Ching helps Earthquakes to 1-1 tie

Kamehameha alumnus Brian Ching scored in the 66th minute yesterday to salvage a 1-1 tie for the San Jose Earthquakes. Down 1-0 to the Chicago Fire, Ching headed Jeff Agoos' corner kick past goalkeeper Henry Ring from close range.

Chicago's Evan Whitfield appeared to have redirected the ball, but Ching was credited with the goal. It was his seventh of the season and he leads Major League Soccer in goals.

Wong loses in Switzerland

Punahou product Kevin Wong and partner Eric Fonoimoana were eliminated yesterday in the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event in Gstaad, Switzerland.

Eleventh-seeded Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde beat the 14th-seeded Americans 21-17, 24-22. Wong and Fonoimoana finished 13th in the beach volleyball tournament.

Singletary to speak at Quarterback Club

Hawaii football coach Vantz Singletary and girls basketball jamboree founder Mufi Hannemann headline the group of speakers for tomorrow's meeting of the Quarterback Club. Rainbow Wahine volleyball player Juliana Sanders, KHON weekend sports anchor Wailele Sallas and Tim Busch, the commissioner of the U.S. Soccer Federation's Veterans Cup, are also slated to speak.

Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. with the program following at noon at the Pagoda Ballroom.
