Shoji signs Washington State transfer

The Hawaii women's volleyball team continues to patch away the hole left by the departure of seven seniors.

Hawaii coach Dave Shoji signed Washington State transfer Victoria Prince yesterday. The versatile 6-foot hitter sat out last season and is eligible to play for Hawaii this fall. Prince will have two years of eligibility left.

"Victoria will add some valuable experience to our young squad next season," Shoji said. "She is very competitive and versatile. She can play on the right side or in the middle for us and she can hit the high ball and the quick set."

Prince was named to the NCAA all-regional team in 2002 as a sophomore. The Cougars advanced to the NCAA regional finals and finished the season ranked seventh in the nation. As a sophomore, Prince topped the Cougars in blocking (1.19 blocks per game) and contributed 1.78 kills per game.

UH football season-ticket renewals sent out

Season-ticket renewal packets for the upcoming University of Hawaii football schedule of eight home games have been mailed out, and are due for return by May 5. Season-ticket holders from last year who have not received a packet and want to renew should contact UH.

They will be made available to new purchasers in the summer.

BYUH tennis team sweeps PacWest honors

The No. 1 Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team claimed all six All-Pacific West Conference spots on the first team for singles and all three doubles spots as voted by the conference coaches.

Additionally, junior Adrienn Hegedus was named PacWest Player of the Year for the third straight year. BYUH coach Dave Porter was named Coach of the Year.

Freshman Jing Jing Liu, sophomore Anna Lewis, junior Judy Weng, senior Amy Sun and sophomore Gurianna Korinihona joined Hegedus on the first team.

Golden Hurricane sweep Wahine softball team

TULSA, Okla. >> Tulsa won a pair of one-run games to sweep the Hawaii softball team 2-1 and 5-4 in a doubleheader yesterday.

In the first game, all the scoring took place in the first inning, and Melissa Coogan picked up the loss after pitching a complete game. In the second, the Wahine scored two runs in the seventh inning, but fell just short of a comeback.

Hilo's Fujimoto named player of the week

Hawaii-Hilo catcher Natalie Fujimoto was named PacWest softball Player of the Week yesterday.

The sophomore from Aiea batted .462 for the week to help the Vulcans win three of four conference games.

Seasiders hire Baker as golf coach

Brigham Young-Hawaii has named Gregg Baker coach for the men's and women's golf teams, which is scheduled to begin competition in the 2004-05 season. Baker, the Turtle Bay Resort golf instructor, has been a golf pro since 1972.
