Warriors capture second
national cheer championship

The Kamehameha cheerleaders won their second straight national championship at Walt Disney World last weekend.

The Warriors competed against 59 other squads in the small varsity division at the Universal Cheerleading Association's National High School Cheerleading Championship.

"The competition this year was extremely intense,"Kamehameha coach Dolly Wong said. "There were many very talented teams in our division all focused on being number one. I was very proud of our girls because, despite the pressure, they ran their own race and concentrated on doing their own personal best. In the end, the judges agreed with our way of thinking --Hawaii has become a force to be reckoned with in the world of competitive cheerleading."

The Saint Louis School cheerleaders -- the Warriors' ILHfoes --made it as far as the semifinals.

The championship event is endorsed by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Kamehameha's national champion cheerleaders are Jessie Ahuna, Mia Archuleta, Tiare Camarillo, Corinne Chun, Jessica Kaanoi, Alyssa Kong, Shawna Lee, Emi Manuia, Summer Maunakea, Jasmine Merseberg, Tamara Patton, Chanel Silva, Kawena Vierra and Lehua Watanabe. Wong has two assistants -- Melissa Beimes and Shannon Cosma.

The Warriors will defend their Hawaii High School Athletic Association state championship next month.

Pine Lasses coming: Hawaii's smallest islands produce some unforgettable baseball and softball talent.

Remember the Molokai Farmers' two straight state baseball championships in 1999 and 2000?

This year's Lanai softball team has a chance to take the inaugural Division II state title. The Pine Lasses are two wins away.

They play Kalaheo (6-6)in the semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m. at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium and are aiming for a spot in Saturday's 6 p.m. final.

What are the chances?: At the start of the winter season, not too many people would have guessed that the Pearl City softball and girls soccer teams would have identical 9-3-1 records entering this week's state tournaments in those sports.

Ties are unusual in softball, but the Chargers were forced to settle for a 2-2 deadlock in last week's Oahu Interscholastic Association third-place game against Kailua to ensure the title game would be played in daylight.

Pearl City's soccer tie this season came in a 1-all contest against Kapolei.
