Second half salvages
UTEP game for Chang

Hawaii’s quarterback has
piled up some impressive numbers
the past few weeks

Tim Chang is sick. But, to borrow from the current popular lexicon, he's also putting up sick numbers.

For some quarterbacks in conventional systems, Chang has done a season's worth of work in the past three games.

He has completed 100 of 160 passes for 1,313 yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions in victories over Fresno State and Louisiana Tech and Saturday's 31-15 homecoming win against Texas-El Paso at Aloha Stadium.

The junior, who ranks second in the nation in total offense, is the first to admit he was off target in the first half Saturday, when he completed 11 of 26 passes for 176 yards. But Chang bounced back for a 16-for-28, 250-yard, two-touchdown second half.

Though the numbers indicate Chang is on a roll, he said he's ready for the bye week coming up after the Warriors (5-3, 4-1 Western Athletic Conference) visit San Jose State (2-5, 1-3) this Saturday.

"I'm looking forward to one more road game and then we get a rest," said Chang, who has a flu virus and needed IV fluids at halftime Saturday.

"I have flu-like symptoms and feel very weak, got a fever," said Chang, who first felt sick Friday. "I took a shot and got some antibiotics.

"I think it's from the combination of a lot of things. The road back and forth, back and forth (UH has a record six road games this fall). Not getting enough rest. I'm a person who wakes up at 4:45 in the morning because I've got that commute from Mililani. It's just one of those tiring things you've got to work through. It's no biggie."

Chang was aided by the offensive line's best game of the season. The Warriors allowed no sacks for the first time this year.

"I think we did a good job giving Timmy some time," freshman tackle Jeremy Inferrera said. "Timmy made some plays with his feet, got out of the pressure. But I think offensive line-wise we did good."

Coach June Jones had mixed thoughts about the performance of Chang and the Warriors' unsteady offense.

"Timmy, I thought, showed courage. He came out and, I thought, made some good throws in the second half," Jones said afterward. "There's frustration even right now. UTEP does a good job with their scheme and they've got some good players."

And the nominees are: UH put in the names of running back Michael Brewster, defensive end Mel Purcell and kicker Justin Ayat for WAC Player of the Week honors.

Brewster posted game highs and career highs with eight receptions for 138 yards. He also rushed for a team-high 22 yards on five carries.

Purcell, a sophomore playing his first season, was in on a career-high 12 tackles, including two of Hawaii's five sacks.

Ayat made a career-high four of four field goals, but also missed two of three extra points.

Mascot, cheerleader apologize: UH's unofficial mascot, "Vili the Warrior" (entertainer Vili Fehoko) and a UTEP cheerleader apologized to each other for an altercation during Saturday's game, Fehoko's wife and manager, Linda Fehoko, said last night.

Linda Fehoko and other witnesses said the cheerleader threw a pom-pon at Vili Fehoko, and he threw a ti-leaf bracelet at the cheerleader, hitting her in the face.

"He did not realize it might hurt her," Linda Fehoko said. "He apologized to her and wanted to make sure everything was OK with her. She said she was sorry, too."

Linda Fehoko said the cheerleader appeared to be uninjured. The incident stemmed from the UTEP mascot and the cheerleader coming to the UH sideline, where Vili Fehoko does his act, Linda Fehoko said.

UTEP officials and Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier were not available for comment yesterday.
