Hawaii surfers still alive in U.S. Open

Conan Hayes scored 15.66 points to secure the second best ride of the day and advance to the round of 96 at the U.S. Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach, Calif., yesterday.

Only Nathan Yeomans had a higher score than Hayes, grabbing 15.67 points.

Hayes was the only Hawaii surfer to win his heat, but Jason Shibata, Kaipo Jaquias and Jamie O'Brien came in second in their heats.

Dwyer dispatches Wilson in first round

Bridget Dwyer of Kailua beat Sammy Sue Wilson of Fort Myers, Fla., 4 and 2 to advance to the second round of the Trans National Championship at Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M., yesterday.

Dwyer will take on Seema Sadekar of Bradenton, Fla., in the second round today.

Merynn Ito of Aiea lost her first round match of the tournament, falling to Jeanne Cho of Gainesville, Fla. 4 and 3. Dwyer needs to win five more matches to take the championship in the 64-girl tournament.

Mililani gets through first round

Sarah Weisskopf pitched a complete game and only gave up three hits to help Mililani Prep to a 4-2 win over Valley Sting (Ohio) at the ASA 18-under softball tournament at Garland, Texas, yesterday.

Lee Ann Horiuchi paired hits for Mililani, who scored all the runs they would need with a three-run third. Malama Manuma contributed a double to the cause.

Bracket busted at Men's Night Doubles

The sixth and seventh seeds upset the top two seeds last night to reach the final four in the Men's Night Doubles at Kailua Racquet Club.

Seventh-seeded Michael Bruggemann and Erich Chen beat top-seeded Brendon Curry and Eric Vervloet 6-4, 6-4 and No. 6 Chris Ma and Malino Oda swept Stephan Pampulov and Jan Tribler 6-4, 6-3. Bruggeman/Chang will take on Ma/Oda tomorrow for the right to play in the championship Saturday at 6 p.m.

The quarterfinal round completes tonight, as No. 2 Ikaika Jobe and Bradley Lum-Tucker play No. 8 Channon Alcon and Dennis Lajola and No. 3 Ryan Ideta and Erik Sandblom take on No. 5 Mika Maata and Matey Pampulov.
