Don Ho wows
the wahines in Iowa

THIS appears to be the time of year when Isle performers travel to the mainland for appearances. Aiea boy Lee Laquihon, now living in Bellevue, Nebraska, crossed the Missouri River to attend Don Ho's show at Harrah's Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He reports people started lining up at 3:30 p.m. for the 6 p.m. performance. Lee writes, "The show was truly Don Ho and the ladies were there in force. Don has not lost his charms with the women." He met many others from Hawaii to drove in for the show ...

OTHERS on the move: Na Leo landed the music performance slot on Kristi Yamaguchi's "Always Dream Foundation" dinner and fund-raiser at the Nikko Hotel in San Francisco. Hawaii is well represented at the event with Brooke Lee and Jesse Sapolu among the star guests and John Sikhattana from Roy's in the Bay Area as one of the chefs ... Na Leo returns in December for shows in Walnut Creek, Fresno, Cupertino, Whittier and Sacramento between Dec. 2 and 7 ... And more isle performers will be at Montalvo for "Aloha Live" on June 27. Performing at the Garden Theater will be Willie K, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom and Ernie Cruz Jr. ... Mainland performers are heading this way too, sort of. Ex-Isle resident Guido Salmaggi returns to sing the National Anthem for the Outrigger Canoe Club's MacFarlane Regatta on the Fourth of July. "After that," reports Guido, "I'm calling it quits." Well, he has been singing it for more that 60 years, says Guido, "so before I forget the words I'm calling it a day." ...

Magic at Waikoloa

IT was definitely a Magic time for legendary NBA star Earvin "Magic" Johnson and his family at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Isle. The Johnsons preferred to traverse the canal in mahogany boats as their mode of getting around the huge complex. And as for Magic, his daily schedule called for deep-tissue massage, while the ladies opted for beauty treatments at the Kohala Sports Club & Spa. Plus, of course, snorkeling, swimming and dining regularly at Donatoni's and Imari. Magic graciously signed autographs for fans and even hired a limo to take the family to Kona to catch a movie. Yeah, with my luck I'd end up sitting directly behind the 6-foot-9 Magic Man ...

PHOTOG Kim Taylor Reece is best known for his shots of scantily clad hula dancers, but for some reason he's also featured in a six-page spread in Home and Garden Magazine, which focuses on his Sacred Falls KTR Gallery. Reece and partner Kanoe, are just back from Paris and London, seeing and photographing all the sights. Despite the exotic surroundings, the photog was anxious to get home and work on a new, upcoming video ...

Day in the life

THAT "Day in the Life" of Gov. Linda Lingle which Bernadette Baraquio and her Channel 2 crew profiled from sun up to lights-out following the guv from meeting to meeting, airs tonight on KHON-TV at 9:30 and will be rebroadcast Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Culling all that activity down to a half-hour wasn't easy ...
