Bonsai show

The Pacific Bonsai Club will hold its annual bonsai plant sale 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Noelani Elementary School cafeteria, 2655 Woodlawn Drive.

Club members will also showcase prized bonsai during the plant sale. For more information, call 737-7156.

Honohono orchid class

Learn the basics of growing Honohono orchids as expert Randy Tajima, owner of Mid Pacific Orchids teaches how to cultivate these fragrant beauties 9:30 a.m. to noon tomorrow.

The class will be held at Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden. To register call 537-1708. The cost is $25; $23 for members.

Aiea Orchid show

Hundreds of orchid enthusiasts, from the back-yard hobbyist to the local commerical grower, will showcase their plants at the 22nd Annual Aiea Orchid Club show June 13 to 15.

The show will be held at Aiea Elementary School cafeteria. Hours are as follows with a schedule of lectures and demonstrations:

>> 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 13:

11 a.m. dendrobium orchid culture; 2 p.m. orchid pests and diseases; 6 p.m. honohono orchid culture.

>> 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 14:

11 a.m. phalaenopsis orchid culture; 2 p.m. anthurium culture; 4 p.m. honohono orchid culture. There will also be a kiawe-grilled chicken sale.

>> 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 15:

11 a.m. general orchid cultre.

A $2 donation will be collected at the entrance each day of the show.

Tackling termites

It's swarm time again, and homeowners interested in the evil nemesis -- the termite -- have an opportunity to learn more about these wood-eating insects, including tips on how to prevent and control them from University of Hawaii termite experts this month.

The Hawaii Area-Wide Termite Suppression Project of the UH's College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources is presenting a series of termite information seminars. The first takes place 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 18 at Moanalua High School through the Moanalua High School Adult Education Program, at 2825-A Ala Ilima St.

Participants will be able to ask and get answers to questions regarding termites and their homes.

The termite suppression project addresses research, extension and instruction, and brings UH scientists together with the community in an effort to control termite damage to residences and public buildings. Termites are a serious problem throughout Hawaii with costs to residents estimated to exceed $100 million annually to control and repair termite damage, and repairs to public schools estimated at $241 million.

Right way to remodel

Don't start knocking down walls before checking out the "Remodel It right" seminar, taking place 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., June 21 at Kahala Mall Center Stage.

Remodeling vendors will also stage a mini-expo with table top displays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with experts offering tips on financing and hiring an architect, remodeler or landscaper.

Representatives from the City Department of Planning & Permitting and State Department of Commerce & Consumer Affairs will talk about permits and other issues involving contractors.

'Z' place to be with Trading Spaces host

Vern Yip, one of the key design gurus of the popular "Trading Spaces" show will be on hand to kick off the opening of Z Home's new location at the corner of Queen Street and Ward Avenue.

Yip will take a break from the paint brushes and fabric swatches on the mobile sets of the Learning Channel network show and offer design advice to those popping in to celebrate Z Home's grand opening.

Z Home's new stand-alone showroom opened quietly late last month, with 24,000 feet of floor space.

Yip will sign copies of his new book, "Trading Spaces Behind the Scenes: Including Decorating Tips and Tricks." Bring a camera along with your design dilemmas and you may get a chance at a picture with the design star.

Honoring Kamehameha

The King Kamehameha Statue on King Street will be draped with lei during a ceremony from 4 to 6 p.m. todaymarking Kamehameha Day, observed June 11.

Festivities continue tomorrow with the King Kamehameha Floral Parade from Iolani Palace to Kapiolani Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The parade will hit Richards, King and Punchbowl streets before veering left onto Ala Moana and heading through Waikiki on Kalakaua Avenue toward Kapiolani Park.

Then on Tuesday, the Na Mea Hawaii Store at 851 Fort Street Mall will reflect on the monarch's life and the battle of Nuuanu with talks and a demonstration of lua, or Hawaiian martial arts. Kamehameha trained in lua extensively.

The store itself is close to a campsite, near Fort and Queen streets, where Kamehameha prepared his men for the journey into Nuuanu to fight to unify the Hawaiian Islands.

From 10:30 to 11 a.m., olohe lua po'okela (head master lua practitioner) Jerry Walker will be signing his book "Kamehameha's Children Today." He and olohe lua aiwaiwa (master lua practitioner) La'akea Suganuma will speak about Kamehameha from 11 a.m. to noon, covering the battle of Nuuanu, its connection to downtown and the art of lua and lua weaponry, which they both practice.
