Maui County bidding
for Lewis-Klitschko fight


Maui County bid yesterday for the upcoming heavyweight title bout between Lennox Lewis and Vitali Klitschko.

The fight is tentatively set for April 12.

While the Valley Isle faces some stiff competition -- the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas is the leading contender for the fight -- new Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa is interested in revitalizing boxing in Hawaii.

Klitschko is the No. 1 contender in the WBC heavyweight division and currently resides in Germany. Klitschko's promoter, Klaus-Peter Kohl, said over the weekend the fight would be held somewhere in the United States.

HPU's Maruoka named player of the week

Hawaii Pacific University center Leandro Maruoka was named PacWest Player of the Week yesterday after a four- game span in which the senior scored 54 points, grabbed 36 rebounds. He also recorded his first double-double of the season against Alaska-Fairbanks.

Hawaii swimmers ranked 23rd in nation

After defeating Central Washington University and Cincinnati in a dual meet last week, the University of Hawaii men's swimming and diving team moved up a spot to 23rd in the College Swimming Association of America poll.

Hawaii received 20 points in the poll and is now 11-0 in dual meets. Michigan is ranked first with 200 points.

Punahou's point guard proceeding to Princeton

Punahou senior Elyse Umeda will continue her basketball career at Princeton after being accepted to the Ivy League university last week.

"She's a dynamite player and just a really good all-around leader on and off the court," Punahou coach Mike Taylor said.

Umeda, a 5-foot-3 point guard, sat out much of last season with an injury, but returned late in the year and helped the Buffanblu reach the state championship game.

She was also recruited by Yale, William & Mary, Gonzaga and Whitworth.

Wahine soccer stars net academic honors

University of Hawaii seniors Wanette Miyashiro and Noelle Takemoto were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Scholars All-West first team yesterday.

Miyashiro, a three-year captain from Aiea and a physical education major, maintained a 3.7 cumulative grade-point average while Takemoto, a history major from Honolulu, carried a 3.5 mark.

Kalabic repeats as All-American

For the second year in a row, Brigham Young University-Hawaii's Vanja Kalabic was named to the NCAA II Water Polo All-American first team.

The sophomore from Belgrade, Yugoslavia, scored in 24 of the Seasiders' 26 games this season, including a season-high nine goals against Chapman.

Kalabic helped lead the Seasiders to their first appearance in the national rankings.

Harrison, Sardinhas at baseball clinic

Former Hawaii standout Kenny Harrison tops the list of instructors for a baseball clinic at Central Oahu Field on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Joining Harrison will be, among others, the Sardinha brothers -- Dane, Bronson and Duke, Les Akeo and Paul Ah Yat.

Youngsters ages 11-years and under will take the field from 9 a.m.-noon. A clinic for kids 12 and older will be held from 1-4 p.m.
