Warriors, Raiders in
the running for a title

Kamehameha and Iolani will attempt to retain their state titles when they step to the starting line at the Honolulu Marathon/Hawaii High School Athletic Association state cross country championships on Friday.

The three-mile boys race and two-mile girls race will be held at Central Oahu Regional Park. The girls race starts at 9 a.m., with the boys to follow at 9:45.

Kamehameha has won five consecutive state boys championships and remains a favorite after winning the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title last Saturday. J.B. Bolson led the Warriors by winning the individual championship.

Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Radford, led by Jeremy Winters and Andrew Maixner, could challenge the Warriors for the title.

Hawaii Prep's Jared Chapman and Kahuku's Ryan Orme are among the favorites for the individual championship.

Either Iolani or Punahou has won the last seven girls titles, with the Raiders coming out on top last year.

ILH champion Nicole Anderson leads Iolani's title hopes this season. The Raiders placed four runners in the top seven at last week's ILH meet.

Anderson is part of what figures to be a fierce race for the individual title along with Waiakea's Tamara Binek, McKinley's Sheena Thain and Kamehameha's Jessica Domingo.

Pippa Macdonald of Punahou and Kari Tanimoto of Pearl City should also be among the contenders.

State football almost set: Only one berth remains to be decided in the HHSAA state football tournament field.

The winner of Saturday's ILH championship game between St. Louis and Kamehameha will claim the last spot in the tournament.

The OIA representatives are set with their seeds to be determined this week.

Castle and Kailua meet at 7:35 p.m. on Friday at Aloha Stadium for the OIA championship. Farrington plays McKinley for third place at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Roosevelt.

Hawaii Prep earned its first state berth with its 18-14 win over Kealakehe in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation championship game last Saturday in Kailua-Kona.

The win gave Ka Makani their first BIIF crown since 1993. HPA will face the winner of the Kailua-Castle matchup at Aloha Stadium in the first round of the state tournament on Nov. 22.

MIL champion Baldwin takes on the winner of the McKinley-Farrington game at War Memorial Stadium.

KIF champion Waimea awaits the OIA runner-up at Vidinha Stadium.

The ILH champion plays the fourth-place team from the OIA.

Botelho planning to return: Rumors circulated around Aloha Stadium on Saturday that Pac-Five's 45-6 win over Damien may have been Don Botelho's last as the Wolfpack's head football coach.

But Botelho said Monday he hasn't given much thought to retirement yet and at this point is assuming he'll be back to coach again next season.

He said any thoughts of stepping down will have to wait until he's done packing away his team's equipment as well as organizing the upcoming state football tournament and the HUB Classic on Dec. 13.

Botelho just completed his 29th season as Pac-Five's coach. He announced his retirement as Mid-Pacific athletic director last spring after 28 years at the post. He also spent nine years as coach and AD at Damien.

Team effort: Last week's Civilian Marksmanship/HHSAA air riflery championships required a quick adjustment and a lot of teamwork from coaches to move the event to an indoor facility.

The championships were initially set for Pearl City's rifle range, but a conflict necessitated a move to the Dole Cannery Ballrooms.

Zig Look, who coaches the St. Louis boys team and the Sacred Hearts girls squad, said Academy of the Pacific provided about half of the frames needed for the 31-lane firing range, the rest were constructed by coaches over three weeks.

The wooden frames were fitted with a galvanized steel backing to absorb the pellets and a drop cloth covered the gaps between the frames.

Look said it took half a day to install the range the day before the girls championship.

After 120 competitors fired 100 shots each over two days, Look reported no stray pellets had landed outside the range.
