Koa Coffee wins contest

KEAUHOU, Big Island >> Koa Coffee Plantation claimed the title of best Kona coffee of the year, winning the Gevalia Kona Coffee Cupping Competition last week.

Marin and Cathy Artuckovichs run the 10-year-old family farm in Captain Cook. Their coffee was chosen over more than 60 other entries.

Second place went to Sugai Kona Coffee and third place to Wood Captain Cook Estate, last year's first-place winner.

Each entry was judged based on a 5-pound sample taken from 50 pounds of beans submitted by each farm. All coffees had to have been harvested in Kona. The beans were judged both green and roasted for fragrance, aroma, taste, nose, aftertaste and body.

The coffee competition, sponsored by Gevalia Kaffee of Sweden is the signature event of the annual Kona Coffee Cultural Festival. It was held at the Ohana Keauhou Beach Resort.
