Lundqvist waiting on word
about injured left knee


Hawaii junior middle Karin Lundqvist underwent an MRI last night to determine whether the injury to her left knee is more serious than originally thought.

Lundqvist was hurt during Game 1 of last Friday's volleyball match at Nevada. The initial diagnosis was a severe sprain. However, blood was found when her knee was being drained earlier this week.

Regardless if it is a sprain or torn anterior cruciate ligament, Lundqvist was not scheduled to play this week.

The No. 1 Wahine host Nevada on Friday, Boise State on Saturday and No. 4 Stanford on Sunday to finish the regular-season home schedule.

Warriors place 17th at Turtle Bay event

The Hawaii men's golf team finished 17th at the UH/Turtle Bay Intercollegiate yesterday at Turtle Bay.

UNLV won the event with an 857, four shots ahead of Tennessee. UH fired a 930.

Manarii Gauthier led the Warriors with a 230 total after carding a 76 yesterday. He finished tied for 55th.

Washington State's Dustin White erased a final-day seven-stroke deficit with a 67, to win the individual title with a 212.

Fund created for Nate Jackson

A fund has been created to help with the medical expenses of former Hawaii football standout Nate Jackson.

A "Friends of Nate Jackson" fund has been established to help with medical bills. Jackson remains hospitalized awaiting heart surgery.

Donations may be dropped off at any First Hawaiian Bank branch.

2 Hawaii gymnasts headed to Dallas

Two Hawaii gymnasts passed the USA Gymnastics JumpStart program's regional qualifications test in San Diego.

Randi Lau, 8, and Nani Vercruyssen, 10, qualified in Region 2, which includes Hawaii, Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah. They move on to compete in the JumpStart national testing on Dec. 6 in Dallas.

JumpStart is a trampoline-tumbling program to identify talented athletes in the 7-12 age group.

At the nationals, the top six athletes in three age groups make the 2002-03 JumpStart national team.

Lau and Vercruyssen train in trampoline-tumbling at Hawaii Academy. Both also participate with gymnastics clubs --- Lau with the Hawaiian Island Twisters and Vercruyssen with Aloha Gymnastics World.

Golf leaders to convene in Hawaii

Executive Director of the United States Golf Association David Fay will headline a conference to discuss the future of golf at the Sheraton Waikiki Nov. 23.

The public is invited to hear the presentations, which will include President of PGA America M.G. Orender and noted golf course architect Robert Trent Jones. Mark Rolfing, golf analyst for NBC sports, will be the moderator.

Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier will sit in on a discussion about Educational Tourism and Hawaii.
