Movie star eats a quiet
dinner, then leaves!

SUNDAY-NIGHT diners at Ruth's Chris Steak House were seen whispering about how one among them was a dead ringer for "Titanic" star Leonardo DiCaprio. Well, it was a bit more than that -- it really was the "king of the world" enjoying a quiet dinner and obviously pleased that nobody approached him for an autograph or photo ... Randy Schoch, owner of Ruth's Chris wasn't on hand for DiCaprio's evening. He'd been in town overseeing final touches on a new private room with G.M. Al Hosoi and sales director Alex Kutscherenko. but had to head back to Newport Beach for the opening of his newest Thaifoon opening ..

LOCAL adman Marty Schiller is as surprised as anyone over the plethora of books his brother, Lawrence Schiller, has come out with. He has a new one which deals with a lawsuit against Ford. He did a book on O.J. Simpson and another on master spy Robert Hanson. The CBS movie on Hanson is due to run Nov. 10 ... I don't know about you, but I, for one, am sick of the "hip" phrase "24/7." What's wrong with "'round the clock?" Katie Couric used "24/7" on the Today show on NBC before realizing the story dealt with an event that took only four days to complete. "Maybe I should say '24/4'," she said. Please don't. Seconds later, local newscaster Barbara Marshall gave us another "24/7." Please -- it's one of those instant cliches ...

Battle of angels

ORGANIZERS of the Hawaii Opera Ball (Nov. 16 at the Sheraton Waikiki) are hoping to awaken the inner child of every guest. The Ball is themed after Mozart's "The Magic Flute" with suggested dress being "fantasy chic." Co-chairs Nanna Bradford and Cathy Foy-Mahi will wear wings flown in from Hollywood. One will be a pure white angel and the other, a fallen black angel. You'll have to attend to see which is which. Tickets are $200 and available from Hawaii Opera Theater at 596-7372 ...

DESIGNING and constructing a set for a play can be a daunting enterprise, so you have to admire Lloyd "Sandy" Riford. A designer here for 20 years, Sandy has four shows opening on four stages within six weeks. He did the delightful setting for "Honk," at Manoa Valley Theatre and also sets for "Much Ado About Nothing" at Mid-Pacific, "The Diary of Anne Frank" at Castle and "Fiddler on the Roof" at Windward Community College. A pretty diverse collection of plays featuring some pretty diverse sets, thanks to Riford ...

Ho boy

Tiki is not just the theme of Waikiki -- it's also happening in New York. The New York. Times reported on the opening of Waikiki Willy's in the East Village with angry tiki totems, pufferfish lanterns and a mural of Waikiki Beach with big plastic palms sticking out. One guest at the opening was Don Ho, who described it as "awesome," adding, "It's loaded with girls." Those would be the sarong-clad waitresses. Ho was even lured onstage to sing "Tiny Bubbles," though Tina Louise, who played Ginger on "Gilligan's Island," quipped, "The only island I like is Manhattan."
