Owens has tear

But the UH receiver won’t need

before the season ends

The good news is Chad Owens is not out for the season, as Hawaii coach June Jones originally feared. The bad news is UH's sophomore inside receiver could miss up to four weeks after an MRI yesterday showed he has a partially torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

Owens suffered the injury while scoring on a 50-yard touchdown in the first quarter of Saturday's 59-34 homecoming victory over Nevada.

UH medical personnel said the injury is not bad enough to require surgery. If it did, the exciting playmaker would have been lost for the season.

"It's not operable, so that's a positive," Jones said.

Owens, who leads the Warriors with 36 catches for 456 yards, is definitely out for Saturday's home game against Tulsa. The following two games are at Fresno State and at home against San Jose State. The Spartans game is followed by an off week, so at this point the worst-case scenario is Owens will be back for the Nov. 16 game at Rice.

Sophomore running back Michael Brewster sprained his right ankle and is questionable for Saturday. Freshman safety and special teams player Lono Manners is probable with a sprained left ankle. Junior safety Hyrum Peters is expected back at practice tomorrow after missing the second half Saturday with a stinger.

The Warriors have endured a steady flow of injuries to key players throughout this season. Jones said it's not a good trend, but also that he has coached teams that have had worse luck.

"The injuries are an unfortunate part of the game," Jones said. "We're fortunate that the kids who have replaced the injured ones are ready and they're doing a good job.

"We had a lot of guys come up and do a nice job. That's what you expect. We're just lucky we've been here long enough to have some depth to do that. A couple years ago we didn't have that. If (a starter) went down, it was over."

The Warriors got several strong performances Saturday from players who began the season not on the two-deep chart.

>> Junior inside receiver Britton Komine turned in the third-most receiving yards in one game in UH history with 238 on eight catches, including two touchdowns.

His 72-yard TD catch-and-run on the first play of the game set the tone.

Saturday was Komine's first start.

>> Running back John West didn't start, but he was the Warriors' top ballcarrier with 59 yards on nine rushes, including three touchdowns.

West also caught a pass for 28 yards.

>> Senior inside receiver Omar Bennett made his long-awaited debut after Owens got hurt.

He caught two passes for 53 yards, and returned a punt for 19 yards.

"We've got new guys, we've got more weapons this year," senior receiver Justin Colbert said. "It makes it hard for teams to key off of one person."
