Wie eliminated
in 19 holes


WESTFIELD, N.J. >> All six of Hawaii's participants in the U.S. Girls Junior Championship golf tournament were eliminated yesterday at the Echo Lake Country Club.

Michelle Wie, the 12-year-old from Honolulu who has played in two LPGA Tour events this year, was eliminated with a 19-hole loss to Kim Shin of Shoreline, Wash. Also losing in match play were Hilo's Amanda Wilson, who fell to Stephanie Connelly of Maryland, 1-up, and Hilo's Kira-Ann Murashige, a 4 and 3 loser to Ashley Knoll of Texas.

Failing to qualify were Makawao's Lisa Kajihara and Stephanie Kono and Ayumi Hori of Honolulu.

Boy golfers on hold: At Duluth, Ga., Hawaii's two participants were among the 78 golfers who were unable to complete their second rounds at the U.S. Junior Amateur tournament yesterday.

Both Allan Baab of Wailua, Kauai, and Kurt Nino of Honolulu were on the course when rain disrupted play for the second straight day.

Baab tied for 51st and Nino tied for 73rd.

Hayashi-Acia take top seed for match play

Kevin Hayashi and Rodney Acia shot a best-ball 73 to earn the top seed in the Four Ball Match Play Championship yesterday at Oahu Country Club.

Shane Abe and Brad Buck took the second spot while David Ishii and David Chin start the tournament as the third seed.

Hayashi and Acia will take on Enron Derning and Ben Hongo in the first round today at 7 a.m.

Hawaii successful at karate meet

NORFOLK, Va. >> Ty Nakamoto won three gold medals and Aaron Oandasan was picked for the U.S. team at the Pan American World Championships following last weekend's USA National Karate-do Federation Championships.

Overall, members of the Japan International Karate-ki Center of Hawaii and the Hawaii Okinawan Kenpo Karate combined for 24 gold medals.

Nakamoto won medals in the 8-year-old division for kata, kumite and kobundo.

Oandasan won a gold medal in the men's kata division en route to being named to the U.S. team.

Mililani beats Waianae to PONY regional

Mililani defeated Waianae 14-2, to advance to the PONY Baseball West Zone Tournament for 13-14 year-olds in California.

Chaz Miyashiro homered to lead Mililani in the Hawaii championship game at the Pilia'au Community Park field. The zone tournament is Aug. 10-15 in Fullerton.

Hawaii surfers fall out of Billabong Pro

Local wildcard Sean Holmes continued his giant killing run in the Billabong Pro by eliminating current ratings leader Andy Irons yesterday at Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa.

Australia's Mick Fanning also posted two big wins, including a victory over Kalani Robb. Current No. 24 Lee Winkler created a career highlight by eliminating 2000 world champion Sunny Garcia.

Shane Dorian was also eliminated, losing to Joel Parkinson of Australia.
