Arnott agrees to play
for Wahine in 2003

The Hawaii women's volleyball team received its earliest commitment ever when Alicia Arnott verbally agreed yesterday to play for the Wahine in 2003.

Arnott, a 6-foot middle blocker, is finishing her junior year at La Pietra-Hawaii School for Girls. She is the daughter of Tom Arnott, an all-American volleyball player for Outrigger Canoe Club.

"She's stoked," Tom Arnott said yesterday. "I don't think she could get an offer from any better of a program. We thought about it and it's a very good opportunity for her.

"She's got some developing to do but she's athletic and works hard. We're honored that she was asked by Hawaii."

Slater, Robb advance to third round

Teahupoo, Tahiti >> Hawaii's Kalani Robb advanced in the 2002 Billabong Pro Teahupoo yesterday.

Robb dominated the day's opening match to eliminate Rodrigo Dornelles. Posting a near-perfect 9.75, and then an 8.0 for the highest two-wave total so far of 17.75-points, his opponent suffered the opposite fate, failing to secure any good rides.

"I know Rodrigo is a good surfer, but I made my barrels and that's the difference," said Robb. "It's a full gladiators' pit with all the boats and the biggest waves you've ever seen. We're lucky it's not out of control like that today 'cause you can get killed, for sure."
