Crown of Thorns, offered at the Foster Botanical Garden sale tomorrow, make beautiful haku.

Make room for more

The Foster Botanical Garden Plant Sale tomorrow offers a good opportunity for gardeners to find plants they've always wanted.

The Chinese flowering tree Kwai fah, the fragrant Molokai hibiscus and many other favorite islands will be available. Among one of the more unusual offerings is the Euphorbia milii, commonly called the Crown of Thorns, that is a favorite in xeriscape gardens.

The drought-tolerant plant produces colorful oval-shaped flowers (similar to cup-and-saucer blossoms) that are becoming prized as haku lei material as well. The flowers, ranging in pale pastels to hot reds and pinks, can last up to three days.

The sale will feature plants that produce nickel-sized flowers and the Thai hybrids with half-dollar sized flowers. Haku lei made with other flowers, dried wreaths, flower arrangements and baskets also will be for sale.

The sale will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Foster Botanical Garden, 50 N. Vineyard Blvd. Admission is free. Call 537-1708 for more information.
