Neglectful-death suspect
granted supervised release

Star-Bulletin staff

A judge allowed yesterday the supervised release of a 43-year-old Kaneohe man accused of murder by omission in the death of his 38-year-old wife.

Circuit Judge Gail Nakatani released Darren Yokotake, a shipyard worker, to the supervision of his sister. Yokotake turned himself in and made his first appearance in Circuit Court yesterday with his daughter and sister by his side.

Yokotake was indicted by a grand jury March 28 on a second-degree murder charge for allegedly causing his wife's death by intentionally or knowingly failing to seek medical treatment for her from about Nov. 1, 2000, to March 21, 2001.

Police said Lisa Yokotake suffered a stroke several years ago, remaining bedridden until her death.

Deputy Public Defender Ed Harada said Yokotake's sister is willing to serve as a sponsor and have him live in her home in his supervised release.

Deputy Prosecutor Rom Trader did not object to the request, saying Yokotake was questioned more than a year ago after his wife's death and has never attempted to flee.
