No. 3 BYUH edges
No. 1 HPU in tennis

Brigham Young-Hawaii showed Hawaii Pacific that collegiate tennis is indeed a team sport, sweeping the national No. 1 in doubles then beating them overall 5-4 at Kailua yesterday.

But it wasn't an upset, as the Seasiders came into the match ranked No. 3.

"Whether we are No. 1 and they are No. 3 -- or the other way around -- really doesn't make much difference," BYUH coach Dave Porter said. "I think it just tells us that both teams are very competitive and are in a group of a half dozen (championship caliber) teams."

HPU fell to 6-2 on the season, while BYUH stayed perfect at 6-0.

The Seasiders went into the singles competition with a 3-0 lead, thanks to a sweep of all three doubles matches. Paouda Ndiaye and Andrew Makarevich polished off the sweep with a 9-8 win over Stefan Pampulov and Blaz Jurjec after the Seasiders' other two teams won their matches 8-6 and 8-2.

But HPU's Jurjec, Jan Tribler and Matey Pampulov beat their opponents in straight sets to erase the advantage and leave it up to the Nos. 1, 5 and 6 players. Ndiaye beat Karl Sloss 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to push BYUH up by one, but Stefan Pampulov tied it again when he closed out Merc 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

Jan Krejci gave the Seasiders the win with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 win over HPU's Mikael Maata, which came just as Pampulov was walking off the court a winner.

HPU plays Chaminade at home Tuesday while BYUH is off unil taking on Chaminade Feb. 28 in Laie.

The teams play against each other again March 19 in Laie, their last meeting of the regular season.
