Beneath swaying lanterns, dancers dressed in happi coats and kimono, move in a circle, coordinating steps and hand motions in celebration of the Obon season, when Buddhist temples and societies honor the dead with song and dance.

For newcomers, lessons are often offered a week ahead of the real thing. Here is a list of upcoming practice sessions and dances:

THIS WEEK ON OAHU

Koganji Temple, 2869 Oahu Ave., 988-7214. Children's lantern parade 5:30 p.m. today, dance 5:30-10:30 p.m. today and tomorrow, with taiko performances on both nights, and food booths offering local and traditional favorites such as beef stew and kalua pig and cabbage.
