Two win gold at
judo nationals

INDIANAPOLIS >> Hawaii's Amy Tong and Taylor Takata won gold medals yesterday at the USA Judo Collegiate National Championships.

Tong, who competed in the Sydney Olympics this summer, finished her collegiate career at San Jose State with her fourth gold medal. She won the 78-kg (171.6 pounds) class and will be representing the U.S. this month in tournaments in Italy and Holland.

Takata, an Iolani School graduate who is a freshman at San Jose State, won the 60-kilogram (132 pounds) class. He also will be competing on the U.S. team in the two European tournaments.

In the High School division, Aaron Raney placed fifth yesterday in the 66-kilogram (145.2-pound) class. The Iolani student was the only judoka from Hawaii among the 180 prep athletes.

Boxing at Aloha Tower

David Fried of Maui and Mexico's Omar Fernandez make their professional boxing debut in a four-round cruiserweight bout on the card scheduled tomorrow at Aloha Tower Marketplace's Pier 10.

The "Viva La Raza, Hawaii vs. Mexico'' event has nine bouts scheduled, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Other boxers representing Hawaii will be Clay Lewis, Serena Sojot and Marco Dickson, all of Honolulu; Louie Parra of the U.S. Army, and Jerry Seraby and Michael Balasi of Kalihi.

The eight-round main event features junior welterweights Saul Hogan (7-3-1) of Honolulu against Mexico's Ramon Ortiz (7-1).

Kop junior golf benefit

The eighth Guinea Kop Memorial Golf Tournament, which will benefit the Oahu Junior Golf Association, will be held March 28 at the Pearl Country Club with a 12:20 p.m. shotgun start.

The format will be a three-person scramble and the entry fee is $425 for the team, of which $260 is tax deductible. For more information, call 456-3441.

Fishing tourney in Kona

Forty teams from nine countries and 14 states will compete in the second Rolex/IGFA Offshore Championship, March 24-31, in Kailua-Kona.

The fishing tournament consists of the winning teams from each of 60 qualifying fishing events worldwide. The event uses a tag-and-release format.

Longboard contests set

The Hawaiian Longboard Federation will run six events this year.

The first event is the Queen's Classic on May 5-6 at Kuhio Beach (Queen's), followed by the Maui Longboard Bash at Launiaupoko Beach on May 26-27, Kewalo Open at Kewalo Basin on June 16-17, Toes at the Bowls at Ala Moana Bowls on July 14-15, Hana Hou Challenge at Kuhio Beach (Queen's) on Sept. 1-2, and a Pro Invitational specialty session on a date to be announced. Irwin sets Siebel Classic record

Hale Irwin became the Senior PGA Tour's career victory leader, winning the Siebel Classic for his 30th title on the 50-and-over circuit.

Irwin, who broke a tie with Lee Trevino for the victory lead, shot a 7-under 65 to finish five strokes ahead of Tom Watson and Allen Doyle. Irwin, who represents the Kapalua Bay Resorts, had a 10-under 206 total on the Coyote Creek course.
