There's nothing un-PC about the music of ¡Cubanismo!

¡Cubanismo! debuts

Star-Bulletin

President Clinton may have been criticized for allowing Fidel Castro to shake his hand, but there'll be a whole lot of Cuban-style shakin' going on tomorrow night when ¡Cubanismo! plays Hawaii.

The group is led by trumpeter Jesus Alemañy. They play at 8 p.m. Friday at Leeward Community College Theatre. Admission is $20; $18 for students, seniors and military.

The group's latest recordings are "Mardi Gras Mambo," which combines Cuban melodies into New Orleans boogie-woogie, and "Malembe," which has more of a traditional Havana-swing sound.

Long known in both Havana and London, Alemañy became one of the best-selling Cuban artists in the world in the late '90s with his all-star bands and recordings.

The traditional Cuban countryside melodies and Alemañy's original compositions are treated with an urban, big-band swagger. This includes old-time Cuban arrangements such as the son, as well as classic Latin forms such as the rhumba, mambo and cha-cha. What we think of as "salsa" today is the music of Cuban emigrants.

Interest in classic Cuban music exploded with the worldwide success of Havana's Buena Vista Social Club and its many offshoots.
