OIA soccer quarterfinal
pairings set

The Kalaheo, Aiea, Kailua and Leilehua High School boys' soccer teams advanced through yesterday's opening round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association championship tournament.

In today's quarterfinals, Aiea plays Castle and Kalaheo takes on Pearl City at Pearl City, while Kailua meets Mililani and Leilehua goes against Kaiser at Kaiser.

At Aiea yesterday, Nathan Amous and Michael Bowles each scored two goals to lead Kalaheo past Moanalua, 6-3, and Aiea beat Kahuku, 4-1.

At Kailua, the Surfriders downed Radford, 4-1, and Kurtis Higaki scored twice as Leilehua blanked Roosevelt, 3-0.

Goldstein, Szymanski advance

No. 1 seed Paul Goldstein of Rockville, Md., advanced to the second round of the USTA Challenger tennis tournament at the Hilton Waikoloa Village with a 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 victory over veteran Richey Reneberg.

Unseeded Jimy Szymanski, 24, of Caracas, Venezuela, fended off 12 match points against No. 4 seed Sebastien Lareau before clinching the 2 hour, 35 minute battle match, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6.

Six of the top eight seeds advanced in the 32-player field.
